Bandy Heritage Center to open new exhibit in September 2016--Dalton and the World: The Odyssey of Lenna Gertrude Judd

August 19, 2016

Community leader, world traveler, and horticultural expert are only a few of the titles used to describe Lenna Gertrude Judd. In 1903, while on a bicycle tour of the South, Lenna Judd and her husband Morton, heir to a family fortune generated from the brass manufacturing industry in Connecticut, stopped to rest in Dalton. Finding the climate beneficial to Morton’s health and charmed by the mountains and valleys of Northwest Georgia, the Judds chose to move from New York and make Dalton their permanent home. After purchasing 150 acres of land on the edge of town and building a two-story Colonial frame house, Morton, Lenna, and their son Hubert immersed themselves into the life of their new community. Through the use of her family’s personal photographs, documents and objects this exhibit traces the remarkable life and travels of a family of privilege in the early years of the twentieth century.

To introduce the exhibit, the Bandy Heritage Center will be previewing some of the objects Mrs. Judd brought back from her travels to China.

This puzzle ball, hand carved from a single piece of ivory, exemplifies the craftsman's talent. Some puzzle balls could contain up to four smaller balls. Having no practical use, the carving was a novelty indicating the high skill level of the artisan.
