Gignilliat Memorial Hall

Sequoya Hall, the first classroom building on the Dalton Junior College Campus, quickly proved inadequate to service the needs of the rapidly expanding student population. In order to provide a better learning environment, a new general purpose classroom building was completed in 1970. Memorial Hall became the home of the social science, humanities, and business programs while Sequoya continued to house the departments of math and science. Memorial Hall was the first structure erected after the original campus was built. In addition to its use by students, the auditorium within the building is also the site for speakers and other programs for the general public.

As part of the November 1, 1987 ceremonies marking Dalton Junior College’s 20th anniversary of service to the students and communities of Northwest Georgia, Memorial Hall was re-named in memory of Elizabeth Kennedy Gignilliat, the late wife of Dalton Junior College’s first president Dr. Arthur Gignilliat Sr. This dedication recognized the high respect and esteem in which Mrs. Gignilliat was held for her tireless contributions during the college’s early years. Re-naming the building in her honor also recognized the contributions of the spouses of the original faculty and staff.
